2019 Group exhibition
The subject of interest within my work relates to the approach individuals take towards various belief systems, such as religion, supernatural, naturalism, culture embedment, science- psychology etc. I was aiming to produce cultural integrated works using the idea of a magic-realistic environment/atmosphere- sought to be achieved through critical evaluation. Inspired from European tales, traditions, such as the winter solstice festivals, ceremonies etc.
The process involved creating sculptures- 3D work, as well as fabric printed drawings and photography attached to LED SEG light boxes. It has been a long journey of trials and errors, experimenting and improving techniques that I have adopted along the way. A lot of thinking/reflecting and planning beforehand were actioned. Such as carving into polystyrene and taking the textures and materiality of the used medium to the next level. Implying that I had to decide on how can I work with and around one type of media enabling it to resemble another type of material. The result I wanted to obtain is that of a heavy sculpture, totem pole/column-like structure, with an organic look. Meaning that the carved polystyrene blocks should resemble either stone, wood, clay, plaster etc.
The process followed to finalise the SEG light boxes project, involved thorough reflective thinking along with image processing app knowledge. I was intending to re-create a magic-realistic ambient perhaps enclosing connotations of visionary art elements. With the aid of the lighting system- LED, colour palette and fabric I was able achieve this surreal environment.
